An internationally renowned Japanese photographer, Chikashi Suzuki maintains a long-running collaboration with Purple Magazine. Here, he works with the filmmaker Taro Okagawa to create an ambient portrait of the urban scene in Tokyo. The crowds part to reveal to reveal a woman in fishnet stockings and Gucci Ace sneakers gazing into the midst of the busy street. Sneakers are an integral part of cities. They’re what propels us, and what we wear to differentiate ourselves in the mundane urban landscape. The Ace lights up the scene, with punk studs and pearlescent buttons accessorizing the Gucci stripes. The video’s subject also wears a filigreed brass knuckle, a tough survival tool as well as a reference to Alessandro Michele’s ring obsession. It’s a portrait of urban persistence.
