This exciting event brings together two renowned thinkers and doers. Two people who have dedicated a great deal of their professional lives to addressing how our planet and its inhabitants will live in the future. I would like to thank Juliet and Peter who have kindly supported this event, and who in many ways were behind the theme of tonight's event -- Nature v 9billion of us -- The cultural and design challenges.
The background to this debate are the concerns about the growth in the world's population -- whilst there are signs that projected growth of 10 billion by 2050 might be slowing, nevertheless the reality is that we have too many people on this planet if we all expect to consume in the way that we do in the West.
Some thinkers on this issues believe we will struggle to support 5 billion - in the end we have one planet and no matter how much we might all love sci-fi there is no sense that we can identify a planet somewhere out there in the universe that we can all decant to once we have finished with this one. As Nobel physicist Robert Langlin 'earth didn't replace dinosaurs after they died - she just moved on and became something different'. Earth will survive us- but what a cost, what a waste!
To address this we need to move beyond our usual way of thinking and responding which is to focus on short-term actions - we need to look to the long term and take action now - something as humans we find difficult - we need to be prepared to give some things up and to do things differently.
