Mat Dryhurst – Protocols & Identity Play


Mat Dryhurst is an artist and researcher based in Berlin Germany. His research focuses on technical and ethical protocols. He makes music and creates art with Holly Herndon, and their albums ‘Proto’ and ‘Platform’ (4AD) have provoked international critical acclaim.


In the summer of 2021, Mat and Holly released, Holly+, a custom voice instrument that allows for anyone to upload polyphonic audio and receive a download of that music sung back in Holly Herndon’s distinctive voice. And in the autumn of 2022, Mat and Holly launched Spawning, a site that allows artists to see if their work is among the 5.8 billion images in the Laion-5b dataset, which is used to train the Stable Diffusion and Midjourney AI generators. Since 2020, Matt and Holly have hosted, the hyper influential Interdependence podcast, an optimistic pro-complexity exploration of 21st centaury technology, culture and creative practice. In January 2022, Interdependence, along with New Models and Joshua Citarella, launched Channel, a decentralized media organization and platform
