In this 6th episode, embark on a journey through creativity with Raku Kichizaemon XVI.​

The Raku Family is a prestigious ceramic art family loved by Sen no Rikyu, the great master of the Japanese tea ceremony. As a young leader of a Kyoto-based long-established business with a history of more than 450 years, Raku Kichizaemon XVI, seeking a balance between tradition and innovation, visits the Hermès studio in France. He meets Jérôme Giboire, a veteran artisan sellier for many years, and Romain Haye, an artisan sellier-maroquinier of the same generation, who share their delicate handiwork, and they exchange words about their craftsmanship. ​

Raku Kichizaemon XVI | Ceramic artist ​
Born in 1981 in Kyoto. He is the eldest son of Raku Kichizaemon XV of the Raku Family, which began in the Azuchi-Momoyama period and continued for 450 years. After graduating from Tokyo Zokei University with a degree in sculpture, he studied in London. He returned to Japan and has worked as a ceramic artist for the Raku Family since 2011. In July 2019, he took the name of Raku Kichizaemon XVI. While keeping his focus on tradition, he is also making tea bowls that are in line with modern life. ​

"HUMAN ODYSSEY" is a documentary film series in which creators who passionately pursue creation embark on a journey to discovercraftsmanship. Calligrapher Daichiro Shinjo, architect Tsuyoshi Tane, roboticist Tomotaka Takahashi, photographer Kazuhei Kimura, chef Kotaro Meguro, and ceramic artist Raku Kichizaemon XVI. The six travel to different parts of Japan and France, and their new encounters lead to the creation of the next generation. ​
