A friend sent me (Thanks, John!) some isolated tracks of this song and so I thought why not? Got this done in literally half a day and the vocal is no rehearse, one take plus a few tweaks to try and keep the vocal tone going so I did resing a few lines but not to fix mistakes, just to try and maintain that soulful timbre (I didn't, but I tried). The guitar is all one take on both tracks. No mistakes, no punch-ins. Little iffy in a couple small parts but overall I'm really happy how this turned out AND for the very inquisitive... keep reading.

The isolated tracks were basically the same mix and panning as the real song so I had quite a task trying to make it sound more modern and up front. I took the drum track, which was panned to the right with verb on the left and DUPLICATED it to another track. THIS track I put gating on so that only loud sounds could make it through and the gate would shut off quickly thereafter, which kept all the band bleed-through out of that track and just made it much punchier and I could then allow BOTH drum tracks to play so that I got the extra punch but the orig track was NOT gated and that one allowed the end crash cymbals and such to not chop off. I spent way way way more time mixing this than performing it. I literally spent 15 minutes performing it. 5 for vocal, 5 for rhythm guitar and 5 for solo guitar. I probably spent 5 hours mixing and another hour or two on the video.

I also ramped up the background vocals a tad to try and make them more present and up front with the rest of the band. I decided not to sing harmony on that "ooooh where would you be now" oooh part. I felt that w/o it, people would not for a fact it's me singing and not me just putting the real vocals in. The background vocal track are the real singers and I COULD have redone those but I really liked them and I was happy just doing the lead vocal. That's about it.
