New Harp Twins Home Concert Series on Patreon:
https://www.patreon.com/HarpTwins We are so excited to share our arrangement of this incredibly powerful and meaningful song. The mighty lyrics for "Battle Hymn of the Republic" ("Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory") were written in 1861 by poet, abolitionist, and activist for women’s suffrage, Julia Ward Howe. We wanted to give this song our own flare with a faster pace to create a feeling of jubilance and light. However, the speed sure did make the old English lyrics quite the tongue twisters! Although it was not in the first published version of this song, we included the final verse that Howe wrote. Additionally, many modern versions of this song have changed the lyrics to: "As He died to make men holy, let us LIVE to make men free." However, in the original lyrics Howe wrote: "As He died to make men holy, let us DIE to make men free." We used Howes original lyrics as we love the powerful message that one should be willing to give his/her life for the sake of the freedom of others.
