One of the biggest fights in UFC lightweight history is set for October 24th. On that night, champion Khabib Nurmagomedov will put up his belt against arguably his toughest challenger to date, interim champion Justin Gaethje, in the main event of UFC 254. (Bloody Elbow)

Justin Gaethje stunned Tony Ferguson in the headline fight of UFC 249 and now has his eyes set on Khabib Nurmagomedov. Gaethje replaced Nurmagomedov as Ferguson’s opponent for the main event and pulled off a brilliant win. Now the 31-year-old is set to face ‘The Eagle’ at UFC 254 in October and has a shot at claiming the UFC Lightweight Championship.
It has been a superb couple of years for ‘The Highlight’ and he has bounced back impressively following defeats to Dustin Poirier and Eddie Alvarez. He is now gearing up for the toughest test of his career so far.

Justin Gaethje began wrestling at the age of four before attending Safford High School and becoming a two-time Arizona state champion. Gaethje, an orthodox lightweight fighter, made his pro MMA debut in August 2011 with a knockout win over Kevin Croom. He has had 24 career fights to date, winning 22 times with 19 knockouts. Now 31 years old, Gaethje’s last fight was a TKO punches win over Tony Ferguson in May 2020. His two losses came against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 218 in December 2017 and Dustin Poirier in April 2018.

His upcoming clash with Khabib will be Gaethje’s second major headline fight and his third UFC main event appearance. Following his victory over Donald Cerrone in September 2019, Gaethje demanded a fight with the winner of Nurmagomedov vs Ferguson. He said last year: “I want to fight for the world title. I want to prove I’m the best in the world. I want the winner of Tony and Khabib. So that’s what’s next.”

The lightweight champion was due to defend his belt against Tony Ferguson at UFC 249, but was forced to pull out amid the problems surrounding coronavirus. The Eagle last fought in September, beating Dustin Poirier at UFC 242, after nearly a year out following his controversial win over Conor McGregor in October 2018. In his absence, Justin Gaethje fought and beat Ferguson to set up a mouth watering clash with Khabib.
