The former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan administration, economist Mr. Paul Craig Roberts on Russian-American relations on the eve of the summit and its impact on the future, on the miscalculations of Russian diplomacy and of President Putin in the reduction of the tensions between the two countries.
With an inbred hostility to Russia, the danger of the high level of tension is obvious. This danger is a nuclear war, as well as the fact that the Kremlin will always demonstrate a willingness to negotiate, despite the insults. This is counterproductive.
The Russians, Mr. Roberts said, should focus on diplomacy to stabilize former parts of the Soviet and Russian empires in order to make them immune to American meddling. This should be the main focus of foreign policy along with the best possible relations with China...
