Magnificent stories result when triumph emerges from tragedy. Pip Millett’s life story, sadly, includes the heartbreaking loss of her father. As a kid, young Pip would help DJ her parents dinner parties, where 70s classics permeated the air. Marvin Gaye and Joni Mitchell stirred something in her soul more than any other artists. When Pip was 14, her dad passed. It was then that Pip realized “life was too short” to do anything other than double down on her passion. The next rising action in the narrative came when our hero found herself juggling university with the success of “Make Me Cry.” A COLORS performance of the debut track notched up the buzz a few decibles. After school, the lifelong Manchester-area native relocated to London. This year, that immersion in the city’s vibrant music scene has yielded Pip’s ‘Motion Sick’ EP, a 5-track project that weaves her crystalline mid-register voice around grainy samples of soul deep cuts. “Running” is the eeriest of them, dredged in a sense of impending doom. Resolution never comes in “Running.” When our DSCVR camera stops spinning and settles on Pip’s face for her performance of it, a spell is already cast; Over the next three minutes, the bass line moves more than she does. Pip lets that voice of hers do all the work - reminding us that while her story is triumphant, her strength comes from the emotions she’s felt on the long journey to get here.
