There’s a video buried deep on Felly’s YouTube page. It’s over a decade old, and portrays a familiar scene: a high school stairwell cipher starring scraggly-haired students in button-ups and ties. Two things stand out as Young Fels goes to town on a serviceable beatbox of Pharrell’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot” provided by his pals: confidence and passion. By the time Felly left his hometown of Trumbull, Connecticut, he was committed to the music life, and jumped coasts to USC in order to hone his craft. Shades of Mac Miller and Chance the Rapper come through on 2014’s “Fabrics.” A tour opening for Madlib followed, as have genre-shirking collabs with MAX and guitar maestro Santana. Zane Lowe recently premiered “Pot Of Gold,” a new track that’s a lesson in both dynamics and swing. The performance recalls that kid in the stairwell, all the confidence and passion still popping off the screen.
