Claire Chicha has been exposed to various world cultures in a way unique to most her age. Perhaps that explains the diverse musical repertoire of spill tab, her indie project that’s been active in various iterations since 2018. Dive into spill tab’s music and you'll find everything from alt-pop to house to singer-songwriter ballads. Raised by French and Korean parents, Chicha lived in Bangkok, Thailand for a year as a young teen, where she discovered EDM via the city’s vibrant party scene. Then she moved to Paris, where getting a grip on the language allowed her to form a sort of French-singing alter ego. “Santé" and “calvaire” are a pair of pithy electro hor d’oeuvres sung in French. Aside from her breathy vocals, they sound a bit different - a little sultrier in feel and more EDM-adjacent - from the other two tracks on the lactose-intolerant singer’s 'Oatmilk' EP. And check “PISTOLWHIP,” her latest release, where her vocals are pitch-manipulated over badass bursts of distortion. She performed that song and “calvaire” here at DSCVR HQ, covering the entire spill tab spectrum while providing a perfect intro to a talent who gets a kick out of mixing all the colors of her sonic palette.
