Gayle is putting the punk back into pop. Her acidic “abcdefu,” which weaponized the alphabet against exes everywhere, exploded on alt radio, Hits 1, TikTok - anyplace fierce emotions are appreciated, actually. But the Texas native turned Nashville resident is no one-trick pony. Her debut EP, ‘a study of the human experience,’ also delivers angsty lyricism, the kind only a 17-year-old who’s actually going through the pains of growing up could pull off. It makes sense that worries about sex, love and heartbreak resonate with her peers. But her tunes are also impressing members of the previous generation, those who grew up with Paramore on the radio. With Olivia Rodrigo in her DMs and dates supporting emo royalty My Chemical Romance, Gayle is reminding us that guitars, eyeliner, and thrashing breakdowns are back in the mainstream. “I talk about what I’m passionate about,” she proclaims. “And if that pisses people off, then OK.” We love that energy, which she brought to our DSCVR performances of “luv starved” and “sleeping with my friends.” Whenever her eyes appeared from behind her messy bangs to make contact with the camera, that “don’t f with me attitude” was front and center. Prepare to be knocked around a bit.
