When “Russian Cream” swarmed the hip-hop airwaves in 2018, it signaled two things. First, Key Glock immediately became a name to remember, especially since his syrupy flow smartly toed the line between unique and familiar. 21 Savage’s well-timed expletives, Lil Uzi’s infectious ad libs, Offset’s pop radio-ready hookiness: Glock, whether on purpose or not, had shades of ’em all. The second thing “Russian Cream” signaled was the continued resurgence of Memphis rap. And although the scene has been devastated by the violent loss of Young Dolph, perseverance is in the blood. Glock himself said his best pal’s passing erased his “thrill and passion” for rap. But the prolific rapper didn’t stay down for long. Instead he’s poured his soul into an EP, ‘PRE5L,’ and more recently his ‘Glockoma 2’ album. These ctrl performances are from the latter, and the studio vibes were great. “Die Trying” is a somber interpretation of the classic rap adage, whereas “Jigsaw” is all simmering aggression. There’s a Glock for every mood.
