Always trust people with big ears. When you're a newcomer, and an industry exec hits you directly after hearing your latest SoundCloud track, you know you’re heading in the right direction. That’s what happened to BabyJake, the LA dude whose breezy musical vibe usually has a so-what shrug on its shoulders and a crooked smile on its face. His “Cigarettes on Patios” is being embraced by lots of new fans. An easygoing bop about an evening spent carousing, it charms you in the first 30 seconds, and has you sticking around right to the end. A few years ago, Florida native Jake Herring was a hoops fiend, fashion freak, and fledgling songwriter on a break from college in order to try out a handful of musical ideas. His ‘Little Mess’ EP was a valiant effort that didn’t really take off, but its lead track “Miami” was admired by producer DVLP, who got with Jake last year and tweaked a few stylistic elements to come up with a much catchier and individual vibe. Now BabyJake (a hilariously ironic name for a 6’6” dude with a burly beard and lots of swag) has a sharp sound that gives his offhand pop melodies a hip-hop feel. Growing up in Florida, he was a folk-pop fan himself, knocked out by everyone from Crosby, Stills & Nash to John Mayer. You can hear a bit of that influence on the samba-slanted “239,” which breezes by nicely while citing some of the self-doubts that come with living a creative life. (Check the song’s video to see how Jake tries to fight off an army of metaphorical anxieties.) There’s still a bit of that gentle side in Jake’s work. His introspective “Blue Cellophane,” which he also performed for Artists To Watch, has its roots somewhere nearby. It’s as insightful as it is infectious, and it shows how broad Jake’s stylistic reach just might be. Stay close: he’s got more music coming soon. We’re betting that you have big ears, too.
