When 2Rare raps “I’m a trendsetter” in “Rare Steppa,” one could be forgiven for filing the lyric into the humongous cabinet of “Things Artists Like To Think About Themselves.” In this case, one would be wrong. See, the Philly native actually is a trendsetter: He’s at the forefront of an exploding hip-hop subgenre that’s been called “club rap.” Influenced by the frenetic energy of Jersey EDM, the music - and its adjoining culture - is a zippy, mildly disorienting, and inherently fun-loving milieu. Famously, its beats are not easy to flow over, but the dude born Naseem Rafeeq Young does with ease. Swim through Rare’s catalogue and you’ll touch four to the floor beats, Mahomes and Giannis references, and him doing his best Lou Bega impression (“Rare’s Room”). You’ll also find big names such as Lil Dirk and NLE Choppa eager to join the joy ride. Rare and Choppa performed their “DO IT AGAIN” collab on ctrl, and he stuck around to run through “Rare Steppa.” Funnily enough, this one’s a more straightforward pop-trap track. Almost like dude is winking at us, telling everyone just how rare his talent is.
