Bella Poarch - The Making of 'Living Hell' (Vevo Footnotes)
With TikTok's third most-followed account, Bella Poarch is an expert attention getter. Her bubblegum lip-synch videos have yielded billions of likes and Buzzfeed think pieces as well. Now Poarch's massive fanbase is juicing a pop music career at a scale and pace typically benefitting Disney stars. Unlike the easygoing fun of her TikTok content, Poarch’s work as a singer revolves around dark and mature themes. “Build A B*tch” - already streamed more than 300 million times - tackles misogyny and male gaze. “Living Hell” is a raw portrait of her abusive childhood spent in the Philippines. “Cathartic” is the word Poarch uses to describe its creation. Talking to Footnotes about the video, the former Navy cadet details how yellow was the color of her bedroom, a hue with heartbreakingly negative associations. “Living Hell” is exactly how I would describe my childhood,” she says. If you’re looking for a reason for Poarch’s success, the video's director Andrew Donoho has it: “She is an absolute boss.”
