GRACEY may have broken out under her own name in just the last year or so, but she has a history - the 22-year-old has been crafting songs for Lorde, Jonas Blue, RAYE and others for a while now. Call it a hidden track record, and career-wise, it helps explain a recent maturity: her work has become more consequential as she’s started to sing her own songs. As a child, the Brighton native Grace Barker fell under music’s sway on extended car rides with her parents. Around 15 or so she tried her own hand at it, making bathroom recordings on her iPhone that were uploaded to SoundCloud and appreciated by the head of London’s Xenomania songwriting squad. Soon, the precocious BRIT school student was tending to musical theatre during the day and recording studio work at night. Her songs were placed with established artists, but her personal goal of spreading music’s emotional power wasn’t completely fulfilled. Last year’s ‘Imposter Syndrome’ EP solved that - GRACEY’s heart was definitely on her sleeve. That impact was amplified on the recent jewels “Like That,” “Empty Love” and “If You Loved Me.” Each track is intimate, milking inspiration from heroes such as Sia and Joni Mitchell. Her Artists To Watch performances of the bouncy “Like That” and “99%” came out great, and her ‘The Art of Closure’ EP has just arrived. Jump in now. She’s no imposter.
