“You nearly gave me a heart attack/when you said you’re doing well.” It’s gut-punching lines like this that give a edge to Mimi Webb’s pure pop confections. The hard-truth lyric above opens “Good Without,” a soaring power ballad that’s garnered over 60 million listens since its spring release. The Canterbury singer’s tales of love and loss usually come with ambitious pop production and strong vocal work. Trained in the arts at the famed BRIT school and influenced by Emeli Sandé, Webb recalls the fun of being home with family as they heard “Good Without” for the first time. “My mum was eating as we heard it, and her food just went everywhere because [we were] jumping around the kitchen!” Last year, her “Before I Go” was touted by TikToker Charli D’Amelio, and an encounter with viral fame ensued. Social media hype can be slippery, but if anyone was poised to catch and hold it, it's Webb, who had used her pandemic quarantine time to dig up emotions that were “long and buried,” and address them in song. These days, it’s all about letting herself shine. “Dumb Love,” her follow-up to “Good Without,” also hit the UK Top 20 charts.
