Yonatan Ayal asks a lot of questions in the songs he makes as Chiiild. Like, “How does it feel walking fast asleep?” Or, “How can I translate your words into light?” And, “Will you stay here for a while or have you had enough?” Sometimes existential, sometimes self-reflective, these queries always match Chiiild’s exploratory psych-R&B. Yoni’s called his reverb-drenched sound “synthetic soul,” and used the same phrase as the title of his 2020 debut EP. It dropped after the Quebec native had spent a few years in Los Angeles, where he wrote and produced projects for other artists. But as cool as a credit on a Chloe x Halle or a J Lo song was, Yoni couldn’t ignore an urge to create his own music. So with his longtime Montreal pal Pierre Luc-Rioux, he began focusing on all things Chiiild. The result was seven tracks of psych-R&B that struck a balance between familiar funk and hazy atmospheres. With its minimal slap-pop bass line and Space Echo elements, “Pirouette” caught comparisons to Tame Impala and D’Angelo. This past July’s ‘Hope For Sale,’ his first full album, expanded on the futuristic soul vibes hypothesized on its predecessor. Opportunities for live shows arrived this year, too. One Insta video documenting Chiiild’s first headline gig at NYC’s Mercury Lounge reveals Yoni balancing humility and ambition. “I’m finally becoming the person that I always wanted to be. I just needed to express myself.” Indirectly, he references his LA past life. “I was expressing myself through other people, and the message got mixed.” Fans of Chiiild will love the way Yoni, Pierre and their band broke apart “Weightless” for DSCVR Artists To Watch 2022, rebuilding it with surprise breakdowns and a violin cameo. For "Sleepwalking," he flew, ahem... soared, alone. Bet on yourself, and good things will happen.
