Prettyboy D-O's exuberance is so strong that it flows through his body like an electric current. You'll understand after watching his “Living in Bondage” Ctrl performance. Known for a magnetic stage presence, idiosyncratic delivery, and color-changing dyed hair, the Nigerian-American rapper makes a big impression quickly. Ironically, it took a sec for his career to take off. After dropping out of med school, D-O and some friends started an indie label, the highlight of which was the relative success of his buzzy track called “Tinkoko.” A short time later, he moved back to Lagos, where the burgeoning ‘alte,’ or afro-indie, scene provided a robust infrastructure that boosted D-O’s creativity and yielded two albums: 2018’s ‘Everything Is Pretty’ and last year’s ‘Wildfire.’ Lines like “Now they call me bro, these days I ain’t sure/Tell me in the Bible who killed Abel?” hint at a writer with a sharp feel for the world’s pitfalls. There's plenty of truth in “Living In Bondage,” and he was spitting it with extra fire in our Brooklyn studio.
