Professional songwriters share something with NASA and F1 engineers - both build a fantastic product that someone else gets to drive. For some, relative anonymity holds great appeal; others yearn to steer the ship themselves. With three 2021 singles - “Ease My Mind,” “Finesse,” and “On Call” - Nija Charles has decided to grab the keys. The Jersey girl’s songwriting career erupted in 2019 when a duo of albums she had helped pen - Jay Z and Beyoncé’s ‘Everything Is Love’ and Cardi B’s ‘Invasion of Privacy’ - earned GRAMMY awards. “When I met [Beyoncé] I went right into professional mode and avoided having a fan-girl moment,” she says about meeting the Queen - such is the young pro’s standard. She also wanted to avoid being pigeonholed as an “urban” writer, an all-too-common trap for BIPOC creators. A writing credit the following year on Lady Gaga’s pure pop smash “Rain On Me” cured those bruising preconceptions. At only 22 years old, Nija had already worked with music’s biggest names, now she wanted to become one herself. “Ease My Mind (Come Over)” came first, introducing her as a pop-savvy R&B force both sultry and self-assured.
