‘I Woke Up Alive’ available now: https://ffm.to/knyga5y
I was diagnosed with Epilepsy after experiencing two back to back seizures with no warning in November of 2020. I thought I would take medicine and go home and everything would go ‘back to normal.’ I knew nothing about the severity of Epilepsy and what it does to those who are affected by it. We need to talk more about Epilepsy. 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy in their lifetime. After my first two seizures, I experienced six months of remission and then six months of uncontrolled cyclical seizures. My cyclical seizures are unable to be stopped at home with emergency medications and need immediate medical attention. I tried many different medications to regain my quality of life. For many people with Epilepsy, in addition to the physical toll seizures take on the body, finding the right medicines when you are first diagnosed is a grueling and emotionally taxing process.
The footage you are watching documents the year and a half that Jacob and I spent trying to find the proper medicines to keep my epilepsy under control and the hospital stays that followed. These events ran parallel to signing deals to begin my solo music career and the process of having to write my first solo record. Having performed and written music for the last 20 years, this story is not what I imagined my first record to be about. However, I have always loved music for its ability to connect strangers and heal others from a distance. I hope the music I created during this period can comfort, resonate and heal. Finding patterns and triggers for your Epilepsy (as with other chronic illnesses) are key in figuring out proper treatment and preventatives. With this in mind, my diligent partner Jacob took thousands of notes, videos and observations from the time I was diagnosed in November of 2020 (and still continues to) in order to comb through my case over and over again at a time that I was unable to. His observations lead to my current remission and medication success. Prior to falling ill, as we are both visual artists and writers alike, documenting every detail of our wonderful partnership already had a place in our lives and Jacob continued to film despite our circumstances. We didn’t know what tomorrow would bring. Without this footage, I would have no connection to my journey and the ability to share it with you both visually and lyrically. As of July 2022, I have been in remission for eleven months. While life is very different, I am so fortunate for the past eleven months of health and healing.
At least one million people in the United States live with uncontrolled Epilepsy and each year in the United States, there are about 3,000 deaths due to SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy). The more people are educated about Epilepsy, the safer we all can be.
