As a shy kid growing up in rural Connecticut, it wasn’t super obvious that S. Holden Jaffe would head into a life of music making. But a mild interest in the business side, a knack for the tech side, and a series of fortunate turns that included articulating romantic feelings by writing tunes for a boarding school girlfriend, nudged Jaffe towards becoming the fruitful artist working under the name Del Water Gap. “Fruitful” meaning Jaffe’s responsible for lots of songs with lots of individual vibes. Dodging a singular sound, he’s found a way to present a broad palette while still honing an identifiable approach. And he’s become increasingly engaging. “Better Than I Know Myself” and “Perfume,” the songs he performed for our DSCVR session, sound like the big brother and big sister of earlier DWG tunes such as “Laid Down My Arms” and “Vanessa.” Variation, but continuity too. Jaffe has said he didn’t choose music, music chose him (though he deems himself an “ardent enabler”). He made his 2010 debut as a high school senior, but the Del Water Gap endeavor got its initial juice when “High Tops” hit Spotify playlists a few years ago. The fuse was further lit last year, when two indie actresses posted a dance duet to “Ode To A Conversation Stuck in Your Throat” on Instagram. Since, he’s learned how to write and produce for indie cohorts on both coasts, spent Covid lockdown in Maine crafting new tunes, gigged at Colorado’s iconic Red Rocks venue, and came to the conclusion that playing live for fans is the most “reaffirming” part of music-making.
