Olivia O’Brien has been busy. The 21-year-old recently bought a house, dropped her ‘Episodes: Season 1’ project, and celebrated it with an extended vacay in her favorite place, Turks and Caicos. All this follows her 2020 breakup hymn “Josslyn” catching the powerful churn of a TikTok wave, which carried the “hate u love u” singer's music into a lot of new ears. Skilled at honing aesthetics, the singer used a '60s showbiz vibe to promote her six-song 'Episodes' EP. She earlier hinted at her fascination with that era in her “Better Than Feeling Lonely” video. Lyrically, Double O remains the queen of smiling through romantic and existential despair. “Call Mom” is all about growing up too fast, and the spiritual shortcomings of a hyper-material life. Wise musings for a pop star who only recently could legally sip champagne in honor of her success. Similarly, “No More Friends” taps into that aforementioned romantic despair, albeit with less grin and more sneer. The emotions really come through in both performances.
