The next time anyone tells you rock n roll has gone stale, play ‘em a KennyHoopla track. The intro seconds of his 2020 alt-radio breakout “how will i rest in peace if i’m buried by a highway//“ can cause first time listeners to double check they’re not listening to Joy Division’s “Unknown Pleasures.” But then, like foreign spices in a familiar dish, that visceral scream and hi-fi drum machine creates an entirely new flavor profile. "I'm not trying to mix genres. It's just a sonic exploration," says Kenneth La’Ron, who has recently called Wisconsin home. Makes sense: he’s a child of the 00s after all, having grown up in an age when any curious audiophile could find good music regardless of the physical - or genre - limitations of a record store. Our DSCVR program previously tapped Kenny for an at-home performance this summer. He’s kept on rollin’ since then, getting co-signs from Zane Lowe and recently releasing a collaboration with Travis Barker, “ESTELLA//.” That’s a pretty cool achievement for a kid who grew up idolizing blink-182. And for someone who says “I don’t really know what I’m doing” in regards to the whole music-making thing, the millions of streams he’s quickly accrued off his debut EP say otherwise. So do these performances of “how will i rest” and “ESTELLA//.” Due to travel restrictions, neither his band nor Barker could swing the trip, but Kenny carried the energy like a guy who definitely knows what he’s doing.
