Nessa Barrett - scare myself. An exclusive live performance for Vevo.
When artists move to Los Angeles to become stars, the fantasy scenario often resembles Nessa Barrett’s route. As the story goes, the Jersey girl arrived, strolled into a studio, cut her piano ballad “Pain,” and had a record deal not long after. This Sparknotes version ignores the Hollywood “it factor” prerequisite; Barrett has it in droves, as her 17 million TikTok followers will attest. Vibe curation is what the singer does best. Aesthetically goth-ish, she rarely smiles and regularly gives the camera a black-nailed middle finger. Her songs have titles like “i wanna die” and “scare myself.” Right down to the lower cased stylization, “i hope ur miserable until ur dead” manifested from an angry text message to an enemy. Real negative energy can’t touch Nessa these days. She’s too busy prowling red carpets with her boo Jaden Hossler, a fellow TikTok star who makes music under the moniker jxdn. In February, they collab’d on “la di die,” a must-watch vid for their fanbases that has clocked more than 40 million views. In April, the couple performed it on Ellen with drummer Travis Barker, the inspirational puppet master of the pop punk new wave. In our studio, Barrett totally controlled the atmosphere as her voice went toe to toe with her guitarist’s wailing riffs on “i hope ur miserable until ur dead” and “scare myself.” Her fans will freak when they watch her slay these tracks from her ‘pretty poison’ EP, just in time for Halloween. Spooky season is upon us.
